TheRalfZer0's MK vs DCU review

Where to begin…..?

I must admit there was a moment that I really didn’t expect much from this game, due to many reviews going about as if this game is a major let down but yet cool (oxymoron). Even with the supplier that lied like flies about the release date here in South Africa (found out they were holding stock back.).

I came home, put the disc in, installed it onto my HDD (thank you NXE) and then waited a good 30min, in that 30min quickly helped my wife with random stuff (so that she can’t say that I do not help around the house) and once it was done, my heart just could take it anymore…

I started up the game, with its normal Midway logo and such (I didn’t want to skip anthing, was afraid I’d skip an epic intro) after the logo came, the menu screen. Where the hell is the jaw dropping intro, where? What MK game DOESN’t have an intro…

But it wasn’t the end of the world anyways, the menu started off with Batamn, when I selected Single Player, the camera zoomed pass Batman’s shoulder and scorpion came falling down (from where I do not know, but it was cool) then I realized I wanted to see the model viewer before play, so when I returned to the main menu, the animation continued, Batman turned around quickly with a “WTF” face… Enough about the cool animations…

I got to the BIOS menu, and there I could view my fav. Characters in full 3d, unfortunately it would’ve been cool to see them or to chose an animation but none the less, the models look fantastic. Forget about you PS2 models, this was really well done, even the texture quality was ZOMG.

After I had my fix on the BIOS viewer, it’s off to start Story mode, once selected, you are presented to choose a side, MK or DC (Thank you Captain Obvious!) so, I went with DC’s side first. Ah, intro time , these weren’t pre-rendered or anything like the cut scenes from what will seem like a movie, this was pure “real-time”.

To make a story short, Story mode was really great fun, the biggest let down was the length of the Story mode, there is 7 Chapters, and each chapter has about 3 fights in them, between every fight there is cut scenes, some were really funny!

Arcade mode, kind of explain itself, the other let down was that the whole roster (excluding Darkseid and Shao Kahn) was available even before Story Mode

Kombo Chalange:
Yeah pretty much “sounds easier than it really is”, it really works on your button bashing skills, it really is challenging, the bad thing is, no where does it explain the symbols, and with the Xbox 360 crappy D-Pad, you’re sure to Fatality your controller “M” rating style…

Ah, which reminds me, the Fatalities, it really isn’t that bad once you see it for yourself, some are really cheesy, but it really looks good despite of the “T” rating!

The game play is awesome, really, the new fighting mechanics like freefall and Klose Kombat really are great, and Free Fall, that’s Epic, every time I fight I hope to get in a bash while we fall… The movement is really 2D based, where your 3D movements are also available, but with the Xbox D-PAD, you tend to get yourself killed while trying to do a special move. Talking about the sucky D-Pad, the Xbox 360 really doesn’t make executing a fatality any easier.

To sum it down
Pros:
• Great game play really brought back OLD SCHOOL
• Awesome detail to models (damage details are so cool)
• Solid story for both sides with the cheesy humor that lifts tension
• Good roster, really didn’t expect Lex to be this badass
• Voice acting was pretty cool

Cons:
• Story mode is very short and leaves you wanting more
• Lack of cool unlockables
• Kombo challenge doesn’t explain all the symbols
• Arcade endings are stills, not cut scenes
• Not all characters have a chapter in story mode
• Some thing are still left unexplained

Final Score
7.9/10

This game is really fun, but some things could’ve been better
So here is something to enjoy:
