TheRalfZer0's MK vs DCU review

Where to begin…..?

I must admit there was a moment that I really didn’t expect much from this game, due to many reviews going about as if this game is a major let down but yet cool (oxymoron). Even with the supplier that lied like flies about the release date here in South Africa (found out they were holding stock back.).

I came home, put the disc in, installed it onto my HDD (thank you NXE) and then waited a good 30min, in that 30min quickly helped my wife with random stuff (so that she can’t say that I do not help around the house) and once it was done, my heart just could take it anymore…

I started up the game, with its normal Midway logo and such (I didn’t want to skip anthing, was afraid I’d skip an epic intro) after the logo came, the menu screen. Where the hell is the jaw dropping intro, where? What MK game DOESN’t have an intro…

But it wasn’t the end of the world anyways, the menu started off with Batamn, when I selected Single Player, the camera zoomed pass Batman’s shoulder and scorpion came falling down (from where I do not know, but it was cool) then I realized I wanted to see the model viewer before play, so when I returned to the main menu, the animation continued, Batman turned around quickly with a “WTF” face… Enough about the cool animations…

I got to the BIOS menu, and there I could view my fav. Characters in full 3d, unfortunately it would’ve been cool to see them or to chose an animation but none the less, the models look fantastic. Forget about you PS2 models, this was really well done, even the texture quality was ZOMG.

After I had my fix on the BIOS viewer, it’s off to start Story mode, once selected, you are presented to choose a side, MK or DC (Thank you Captain Obvious!) so, I went with DC’s side first. Ah, intro time , these weren’t pre-rendered or anything like the cut scenes from what will seem like a movie, this was pure “real-time”.

To make a story short, Story mode was really great fun, the biggest let down was the length of the Story mode, there is 7 Chapters, and each chapter has about 3 fights in them, between every fight there is cut scenes, some were really funny!

Arcade mode, kind of explain itself, the other let down was that the whole roster (excluding Darkseid and Shao Kahn) was available even before Story Mode

Kombo Chalange:
Yeah pretty much “sounds easier than it really is”, it really works on your button bashing skills, it really is challenging, the bad thing is, no where does it explain the symbols, and with the Xbox 360 crappy D-Pad, you’re sure to Fatality your controller “M” rating style…

Ah, which reminds me, the Fatalities, it really isn’t that bad once you see it for yourself, some are really cheesy, but it really looks good despite of the “T” rating!

The game play is awesome, really, the new fighting mechanics like freefall and Klose Kombat really are great, and Free Fall, that’s Epic, every time I fight I hope to get in a bash while we fall… The movement is really 2D based, where your 3D movements are also available, but with the Xbox D-PAD, you tend to get yourself killed while trying to do a special move. Talking about the sucky D-Pad, the Xbox 360 really doesn’t make executing a fatality any easier.

To sum it down
Pros:
• Great game play really brought back OLD SCHOOL
• Awesome detail to models (damage details are so cool)
• Solid story for both sides with the cheesy humor that lifts tension
• Good roster, really didn’t expect Lex to be this badass
• Voice acting was pretty cool

Cons:
• Story mode is very short and leaves you wanting more
• Lack of cool unlockables
• Kombo challenge doesn’t explain all the symbols
• Arcade endings are stills, not cut scenes
• Not all characters have a chapter in story mode
• Some thing are still left unexplained

Final Score
7.9/10

This game is really fun, but some things could’ve been better
So here is something to enjoy:

Proudly South African? Yeah right....

Well today MK vs DCU should've been out, but once again the "beloved" Ster Kinekor postpone the 360 edition to 5th December, while the PS3 version will snugle up in some PS3 consoles TODAY, 360 owners must wait e few more weeks...

I phone Ster Kinekor, to find out why this is so...

They gave me a tipical South African excuse: "Uh, we do not know....."
Ha, suppose to be profesionals eh? Gimme a break...

Wonder Woman Confirmed

Yes, believe it all here is info from Liepzig...

"He's got that ugly purple suit, the bright green hair, and that painted-on smile that's one part nutjob and one part pure menace. And while he might not pack the punch of a Superman or a Scorpion but that doesn't mean the Joker won't be a formidable opponent in the upcoming Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. We had a chance to try out an updated build of the game today, to check out the newly implemented "rage" system and play as the Caped Crusader's grinning nemesis.

While he was announced as a playable character back at Comic-Con, we haven't had a chance to play as the Joker until today. As you might expect, he handles quite a bit differently from the more traditional MK characters or the beefier DC heroes. After all, Joker doesn't have Superman's strength, or Flash's blinding speed. What he does have, however, is some cunning moves and a few humorous weapons that will surely pack a punch.

The first thing you'll notice is his look. This isn't the bedraggled Heath Ledger version of Joker from The Dark Knight. At the same time, MK vs. DC's Joker isn't the relatively prim and proper version of Joker played in the original Tim Burton Batman film (portrayed by Jack Nicholson). Instead, this Joker draws its influence from the comics, namely the classic Alan Moore/Brian Bolland Batman graphic novel "Batman: The Killing Joke". The Joker's grin is as long and exaggerated as his lean, extended physique and he brings a sort of manic, comic menace to his fighting style, almost as if he's mocking the idea of fighting as he's kicking butt.

And, make no mistake, the Joker can kick all kinds of button. In addition to relatively weak attacks, he's got a veritable arsenal of weapons at his disposal that you can access by pressing various button combinations. These weapons include exploding playing cards you can hurl at opponents, a joy buzzer that will electrocute your foes, and a comic boxing glove that really packs a wallop. And though we haven't seen the full roster yet, we're willing to bet that the Joker's fatality is the best in the bunch: after pulling a pistol on his dazed opponent, he pulls the trigger and a flag with the word "BANG" appears out of the barrel. Just when you think that's it, the Joker pulls out a real pistol and splits his opponents' wig. It's shocking and funny the first time you see it… just what you want from an MK fatality.

So beyond those handy comic gadgets, why is that Joker (or a similarly underpowered character like Catwoman) go toe-to-toe with heroes like Superman? You can thank the newly introduced rage system for that. Though rage will tie into the MK vs. DC storyline, providing an explanation for why all the characters in the game are in roughly the same league in terms of power, when it comes to gameplay, rage plays a very important role.

Each character will have a rage meter, just underneath their health meter. You build your rage meter by taking and dealing damage, or by blocking opponent strikes. As the meter fills up, you can use breaks to block opponent strikes. If you let the rage meter build up completely, however, you can enter rage mode (by pressing the shoulder buttons). Here, you'll have roughly six seconds to kick as much butt as you possibly can. Your attacks will be more powerful and, more importantly, unblockable so, as long as you can make contact, you'll be pounding your foe into dust. Just watch out, because his or her rage meter will be similarly building--as a result, you'll have to use your rage meter at the right moment (preferably to finish off your opponent). Fail to do so, and you might find yourself on the receiving end of a rage flurry.

Where rage mode is a bit tactical, the freefall system is as fun as it looked when it was first revealed. When you toss someone off a ledge, your character will dive into the fray after him, resulting in a long plummet where both characters are beating the tar out of one another. The mechanic here is quite simple--the person on top dishes out the damage by hitting one of the face buttons. Countering moves in freefall is simple--the player just needs to guess which button his opponent will hit next. If he does, the characters flip flop in the air and the cycle begins again. It's not unusual for players to swap positions in freefall multiple times and the player who ends up on the bottom will take the brunt of the damage.

Each of the (currently planned) eleven stages in the game will contain at least one freefall opportunity, as well as a chance to push your opponent through multiple walls while running at full speed. It's basically a button-mashing session, trying to see how much damage you can rack up by slamming buttons as your opponent smashes through wall after wall, with his opponent in tow.

In all MK vs. DC Universe is looking like a lot of fun. Of course any fighting game lives and dies with its cast of characters and today Midway announced four more characters to its final roster of 22 playable fighters. On the DC side you'll see Wonder Woman and Deathstroke, and on the MK side you'll be playing as Raiden and Kano. None of those characters were available in today's demo but we look forward to seeing how they match up in our next look at the game."

Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) looking better then ever

Easily one of the best characters in MK vs DC, and the one i just simply can't wait to see.
It is unfortunate that Green Lantern, back in the era of "Superfriends" was made looking very stupid, untill Hal Jordan, The Man without FEAR became The Green Lantern!!!
Here is a fight scene of "Superfriends" below:

Atleast he's way better TODAY!

Yes the Green Lantern's weekness is the colour YELLOW, it represents FEAR but Hal Jordan was the first Green Lantern that defeated the colour YELLOW and therefore is the best ever!

Well, I decided to make some sprite comics to lighten up the humor at the MIDWAY forums, seeing that everybody is so tense and hungry for new development...

Recently Ed Boon updated his website with a picture than strongly hinted on "The New Aquaman."

A lot of people was upset and started joking about him, so, i made this sprite comics:

"Is your costume dry yet Superman?!?"

"Stand still Scorpion, there is a fly on you shoulder!"

"No Batman, don't, I'll never try to steal the Batmobile again, I Promise!"

Finaly some new screenshots of MK vs DC as surfaced along with a new interview with creator Ed Boon:

Well, I knew from day one that MK vs DC will have a fatality system of some kind as long as it isn't that damn "Kreate-A-Fatality" i'll be happy, even if they bring back Friendships and Babalities!!!

it is so true what Ed said, it's kinda difficult to judge a game with so little info to go with.

My advice to you MK fans going on asif it "the death of MK"; chill out and WAIT!!!
